A Dutch daily, De Volkskrant, on October 29, 2015, published an editorial by its chief editor Philippe Remarque, in which he excused to the readers of the paper for publishing a text that was later proved to be plagiarism.
On July 11, the 20th anniversary of the massacre in Srebrenica, De Volkskrant had published an alleged interview with Dražen Erdemovic, sentenced by the ICTY in The Hague as a war criminal. But as he also, after serving his sentence, became a protected witness, serious doubts were cast concerning the authenticity of the interview; Erdemovic is living in hiding and not under his own name. After a long investigation, editors of the Dutch paper confronted the author, Geerlof de Mooij, who admitted that the major part of his “interview” was, in fact, plagiarism of the story “One day in the life of Drazen Erdemovic” by Slavenka Drakulic, published in her book They would never hurt a fly (2004). De Volkskrant apologized to their readers and to Drakulic. This case of fraud created considerable attention in media all over the Netherlands.
