In her novel Theory of Sorrow, Slavenka Drakulić looks at Albert Einstein through the prism of his relationship with his first wife, the Serbian physicist, Mileva Marić, who gave up a potentially promising career in science to be his wife and mother to his children. Her fate is a chilling reminder of women’s fight for emancipation and equality in a male world.
